More About Me
I am a professional violinist and violist. My musical career began in Palo Alto as a child where I took lessons with Jenny Rudin and performed as concertmaster in the Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra. After earning undergraduate degrees in Music and Biology from Stanford University, I stayed on and earned a Masters in Music. Next, I entered the Eastman School of Music where I co-founded the widely acclaimed Chester String Quartet. As winners of the Cleveland Quartet Competition the Chester worked intensively with the Cleveland Quartet at Eastman and at the Aspen Music Festival. The Chester Quartet went on to win first prize at the Chicago Discovery Competition and top prizes at the Munich and Portsmouth International String Quartet Competitions.
After Eastman, the Chester became quartet-in-residence at Indiana University (South Bend) where I taught and performed for nine years. I left IU to return to the Bay Area and join the Stanford University faculty and the Stanford String Quartet. Formerly an artist-faculty member at the Garth Newel Music Center, Music in the Mountains at Steamboat Springs, the Rocky Ridge Music Center, SoCal Chamber Music Workshop and the Schlern and Orfeo International Music Festivals (Italy), I am currently Principal violist at the Mendocino Music Festival and a core member of the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players. I have been a participant at the Aspen, Grand Teton and Newport Music Festivals, and have performed on NPR, the BBC and German State Radio. My recordings are on the Newport Classics, Stolat, Pantheon, Laurel, Music and Arts, and CRI labels.
Throughout my career I have taught violin and viola lessons privately. While at Eastman I trained with renowned Suzuki pedagogue Anastasia Jempelis. I am Co-Artistic Director and Co-Founder of the passionate and provocative Ives Collective (formerly the Ives and Stanford String Quartets). You can find video and other information about the Collective at www.ivescollective.org.
